This study investigated relationship between psychological distress and social competence among undergraduate students with visual impairment in University of Lagos. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population for the study comprised all the full-time students with visual impairment. Purposive sampling was used to select 65 participants with visual disabilities. A self-develop Psychological Distress Scale (PDS) with reliability of 0.77 was used to collect data. The PDS has two major sections with the first section used to collect backround information. The other section was further divided into four sub-sections used to gather information on sub-variables. Social Competence has eight statements, Isolation has six statements, Peer Communication has nine statements and Anger had 10 statements. The sub-scales were constructed in type 4- points scale of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly Disagree. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation and multiple regressions. The results revealed that isolation and anger negatively determined social competences of the participants while peer communication positively predicts social competence of the participants. The results further indicated that the independent variables did not jointly predict social competence of the participants but peer communication and isolation contributed significantly. Parents, teachers, non-disabled peers and guardian are also encouraged to help create conducive environment for individuals with visual impairment to have good peer communication, adaptable social interaction and reduced level of aggression.

This paper developed child eligibility, dropout and recovery (EDR) model to understudy the rate of dropout as a replica of the SIR model in epidemiological studies, which could be relevant to developing countries in dropout analysis. The study used simulation data to test the EDR model. Although the proposed dropout spread generic model was tested against real economic and educational data in this paper, the paper epidemiologically presented a social spread model for education distribution, which accounted for understanding the spread of dropout, stability and recovery node of dropout social education disease (SED)1 . Thus, the simulation data employed demonstrated an inverted U-shaped of the rate of dropout spread. Using the EDR technique with real economic and education data would be an improvement to the methodology of dropout estimations. So, a future study is suggested to be carried out using real educational and economic data to test the generic model developed in this study.

The study investigated the influences of gender and age on the performance of Senior Secondary School One (SSS1) students in Differential Aptitude Test (DAT). Eight hundred and sixteen SSS1 students formed the sample. A-62 item DAT was developed to collect data for the study. The items in DAT have discriminating power of 0.42 and above, and also with difficulty levels between 0.40 and 0.69. The students were tested in Spelling (SP), Verbal ability (VA), Numerical reasoning (NR), Mechanical knowledge (MK), Abstract reasoning (AR), Comprehension (CO) and Spatial ability (SA) with construct validity coefficients ranging from 0.69 to 0.83 and reliability coefficients were between 0.50 and 0.79. The overall reliability of DAT was 0.74. The result showed that there were significant differences in the performance of male and female students in SP, VA, NR, CO and SA while their performance were not significantly different in MK and AR. The result also revealed that there were significant differences in the performance of students in SP, VA, NR and MK in respect to students’ age group while the age groups did not significantly influence the performance of the students in AR, CO and SA. In conclusion, gender and age of SSS1 influence their performance in DAT. It is recommended that gender and age of the students should be considered while allocating SSS1 to subject areas

The research explored the correlation between advertising techniques and students’ choice of Private secondary schools in Abeokuta Metropolis of Ogun State. The research raised one question and tested two hypotheses. An ex-post-facto type of descriptive research design was used in the study. The sample comprised 155 private secondary School Administrators drawn from Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas using purposive and random sampling procedures. The information gathering tool for the study was a 32 items self-constructed questionnaire titled “Advertising Strategies and Students’ Enrolment Descriptive Questionnaire” (ASSEDQ). Data generated from the instrument were analysed using mean rating and standard deviation to answer the research question, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was made use of in testing the hypotheses. The result showed that the most commonly used strategies of advising in private schools were radio, handbills, social media, roadshows, and direct interaction with parents. Significant positive relationship was found between media advertising and direct advertising strategies and students’ enrolment. Hinging on the results obtained, the research consequently, advocated that private school owners need to enlist the services of Professional Advertisers for effective results. Schools are also to engage in open house system in addition to creating Parents’ Advocacy Groups.

This study assessed the body mass index of staff in Kashim Ibrahim College of Education Maiduguri, Borno state. Three hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive Survey research design was used for this study. The population for the study comprised of staff of Kashim Ibrahim College of Education Maiduguri numbering 566 (academic staff 216 and non-academic staff 350). A sample of 57 (males 37, females 20) staff were selected for the study using stratified sampling technique with proportionate method. The instruments used for data collection were Stadiometer attached to the weighing scale (Metler ZT. 120 2010 model made in China) was used in taking the height and weight of the participants. Height and weight of the participants were used to compute their body mass index, using Quetelete Equation. Analysis of data was done using descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, frequency counts and percentage. t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. All the hypotheses formulated were retained. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in the hypotheses tested. Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that there should be enlightenment on weight management, which should be integrated approach to physical activity, nutrition, and behavioural management

This research work explored the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive educational practices in upper basic schools in Ilorin, Nigeria. It adopted a descriptive research design. Eight schools from public and seven from private were selected, using purposive random sampling technique. 200 respondents were selected from selected schools using simple random sampling technique. One research question was answered and three null hypotheses were tested. Data collected through a researcher designed questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the attitudes of the teachers towards inclusive educational practices was negative. The finding of the study also showed that, years of teaching experience is not a determinant of teachers’ attitude towards inclusive education as there was no significant difference in the attitude of teachers based on years of experience. Finally, it was also discovered that teachers do not have different opinion in their perception on the inclusive educational practices. Based on these findings, it was recommended that students with special needs should be placed in a separate school so that teachers who are trained specifically for students who falls into such category would equip them passionately with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes that make them responsible and recognisable members of their society
